Though I know the travel statistics and have read articles on accidents while traveling abroad, and even though the only two-wheeled device I have ever driven is a bicycle, my wife and I rented a motor scooter. Rental stands are located at every resort and cost about US$7 per hour.
We traveled into the tourist village of Guardalavaca and into the Cuban countryside. We had such a blast that we took the scooter out four times afterward. We traveled to take a look at the other resorts in the area. This seemed to be the best was to distribute gifts to the Cuban people. We felt very safe and followed the few known rules of the road. The roads in the main tourist area were fine, but backcountry roads were bump at times. If you want, helmets are provided.
