Acceptable Group Dining

Arranging a family dinner with twelve guests is harder than you would think in Las Vegas. Unfortunately all of the circumstances surrounding this dinner were not in my favor- I was looking for restaurants available for Saturday night of Memorial Day weekend (an extremely popular time to visit Vegas), several in our party had dietary restrictions, and many restaurants in Vegas require special pre-selected menus and pre-payment for groups larger than 10 people (which I did not have time to coordinate).

After a thorough area search via the internet I stumbled upon Sushi Roku which is located in Caesar’s Forum Shops conveniently on the strip. The on-line menu seemed appealing enough, most of the dietary restrictions were covered, and most importantly this restaurant had no problem taking the reservation for twelve people. Upon visiting the restaurant it is easy to see that group dining is popular at this location- they have many small tables that are easily arranged in long lines to fit groups of any size.

Sushi Roku has a sort of weird location; near no other restaurants in the Forum Shops in the corner of the top tier. Still the restaurant carries the upscale ambiance of the shops into its door without seeming out-of-place amongst the clothing retailers. The modern Asian-inspired dark interior accompanied by strip views from large picture windows makes for non-typical mall dining. I was pleasantly surprised.

The service and staff at Sushi Roku were more than accommodating. They called ahead to confirm our reservation, took last minute changes in stride, and served us pleasantly all evening long. I did detect a bit of schadenfreude in a waiters voice when he attempted to tell my clueless mom what edamame are and how to eat them, but that was the only such instance of any impoliteness. They never hurried us or slacked in their attention though, so overall the service was top-notch.

The menu at Sushi Roku is- you guessed it- mostly sushi, but they also have plenty of things for the sushi-timid. Several people at our table got the filet mignon which they said was very good. Sushi here was not the best I had in Vegas (that would be Hyakumi in Caesar’s Palace Proper), but was good nonetheless- rolled properly with fresh ingredients. Sushi Roku has a great drink menu too offering Japanese-inspired twists on old favorites; ie the lychee mojito. They also have an extensive sake menu.

Our dinner came to about $500 for twelve people which seemed more-than-reasonable, given everyone’s contentment with their respective meals. I probably wouldn’t come here again for regular dining (given the many other options for sushi in Vegas), but I would recommend it for difficult-to-fit groups.
