Quote: One of the best ways to enjoy Savannah is with one of the many walking tours that can be found. With this trip, we decided to go with the Savannah Tours and took their history walk. Our tour guide on this wonderful tour was Helen, who was 68 years young and a lifelong Savannah resident. Her enthusiasm for her beloved city was very apparent and catching. On this tour, you get to see some of Savannah’s beautiful and historic homes, the beautiful architect of Savannah, hear the history of the stunning squares in Savannah, and see some of the places featured prominently in the many films made in this delightful Southern City. And of course, you cannot tell the history of Savannah without a few anecdotes about the Civil War. Helen not only gives you a wonderful history lesson, but interjects her own experiences from living in this gracious city all of her life. She also took the time to answer any questions our group had (and we had plenty) and took extra time when needed. The tour is at a nice and leisurely pace and lasts about 90 minutes and is about 2 miles long. Make sure to bring your camera since the photo ops are plenty.

Greg Profitt, a former Coast Guard member, started the tour company. In addition to the History Walk the company offers a Jewish History Tour, an African-American History tour, the Creepy Pub Crawl, and the very popular Creepy Stroll Ghost Tour. And since this is the town where Girl Scouts got their start, they offer a Girl Scott tour for troops and offer a discount for Girl Scouts. They do offer special group tours and can customize your group. Pets are permitted, on a leash. You meet your tour group at the place specified when you purchase tickets. So make sure you find a restroom before heading out for a tour, and make sure to bring a beverage with you, especially in the summertime. The days here are miserable, and you will be glad you did. You can go to their website at www.savannahtours.com for more information.

Quote: There are about 5 different companies offering a walking Ghost Tour. They each meet at different squares in Historic Savannah. It is basically a tour guide walking you up and down different streets telling you stories about things that happened in these homes. Of course the homes are supposed to be haunted but you don't get to go into any of them. You basically are just walking around and listening to the guide, who is definitely animated and a good storyteller so if you like that kind of thing than great.

Personally, it was a bit corny for me as I was hoping to actually be frightened during the storytelling as I envisioned being at least on the stairs of the homes if not entering them. Also you go to visit the cemetery but you don't enter and the tour guides just tell you stories of who is buried in there from outside the gate. Again, it would have been better if we could go inside the cemetery and see the plots of the souls he spoke of.

Now they do have a tour called the "Creepy Crawly" which is a ghost walk tour but its of pubs and you get a free drink at the first pub which you can take with you along on the walk. You can, of course, buy drinks at each of the pubs you visit which would make for a great tour when it was all done. This tour is $15.

I suggest you visit the Savannah Visitors Bureau where you can get coupons for up to $2 off the cost of these tours.
