Whether you're noshing on arroz con coco or just strolling through town, you'll find no shortage of ways to fill your days in Bogota.
Sightseers will love a visit to the Catedral de Sal, a Roman Catholic chapel buried over 600 feet below the ground in an abandoned salt mine. It's a wildly popular, beautifully striking destination, and unlike anything else in the world. If you're squeamish, a Hemingway-hater, or both, you'll want to avoid the Plaza de Toros Santamaria during bullfighting season (January and February), but might enjoy a show at the historic Teatro Colon, or a visit to one of the city's many museums. The Museo Nacional de Colombia will fill you in on Colombian history and culture, while the Museo de Oro (Gold Museum) will stun you with its gleaming collection of pre-Hispanic goldwork. A quick sunset trip up the cablecar to the peak at Monserrate makes for a rewarding and gorgeous close to any busy day in Bogota.
Activities like Bogota Bike Tours and San Gil Whitewater Rafting are great for the energetic types, but if you're looking for some R&R;, the historical colonial village of Villa de Leyva makes for a great day or weekend trip, and is a popular spot for tourists and Bogotans alike. With its boutiques and cafes framing winding cobblestone streets, this charming town makes for a great day of shopping, eating, and just plain relaxing.
