Ibirapuera Park

This huge, urban park located south of the Jardim Paulista section of town is Sao Paulo’s answer to Central Park. If you're up for a long walk, take the metro to the Brigadero Metro station, and follow Avenida Brigadero Luis Antonio through the city's Jardim Paulista section (don't worry, it's safe) until you hit the park. It's about a 30 min. walk. Otherwise, there are city buses which follow the same route. If you're not staying on Avenida Paulista, you're probably better off asking your hotel to call you a taxi. If you approach the park from the Northwest, you will see the impressive Bandeiras monument, a tribute to Brazil's pioneers. The park’s many paths twist between lawns, gardens and ponds. It’s really quite a pretty place with some interesting looking plant life and colorful birds. The largest swans I have ever seen were swimming in one of the ponds. I’ve heard the park gets crowded on the weekends, but we went in the middle of the week and there were few other people there. A word of caution, it’s easy to lose your way in this park, and the few signs there are don’t help much. The Planetarium and Modern Art Museum are also located within the park. I wouldn’t say that the park is a must-see, but it’s a pleasant place to spend an afternoon on a nice day. One last note, if you're looking for a place to go jogging in Sao Paulo, this is probably your best option.

Ibirapuera Park is considered to be Sao Paulo's equivalent to New York City's Central Park. An older grouping of Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer's pavilions from the 1950's dominates the park. Teaming with Niemayer in the design of the park was the noted landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx.

Ibirapuera Park features a Japanese pavilion (said to be a replica of the Imperial Palace in Kyoto), art museums (Museu de Arte Moderna and Museu de Arte Contemporanea), sports areas, sculptures, lakes and gardens, and a planetarium.

The park is quite popular with the rollerblading crowd, and is a good place to get a whiff of fresh air within the congested big city. Locals pack into the park on the weekends, so it is a fun spot to see how they play in their spare time.

Parque Ibirapuera

Parque Ibirapuera is one of the most visited parks for the citizens of Sao Paulo and tourists for all reasons that are quite understandable.

Its size is 1.6 million square meters in size, to understand just how immense is this park. It is located at Avenida Pedro Alvares Cabral(name of Portuguese explorer who discovered Brazil), with free admission and is open everyday from 5 in the morning until ten at night.

I personally would not recommend being at the park in the night hours, for there are greater possibilities of crime.

Among the many activities of Parque Ibirapuera are sports, jogging and visiting monuments and museums too.

The monument( Monumento as Bandeiras) is quite impressive. I shall be providing a photo of this for your viewing and you are sure to agree. Don't forget your camera too. You will also be capable to see the monument to Formula 1 deceased driver,Ayrton Senna. It's bronze monument of him with a stainless steel car. For those wishing to make the trip, you may also care to visit this tomb in the Morumbi Cementary( Cemiterio Morumbi). On his plaque are inscribed these words, "Nada Pode Me Separar do Amor de Deus", translated as "Nothing Could Separate Myself from the Love of God". Senna was a world famous Formula 1 racer whom died in a terrible race in 1994 in San Marino. He is a true hero to all Brazilians.
