Quark's Bar & Restaurant

Quark's is located in the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel to coincide with their Star Trek Experience interactive exhibit. It is Cardassian themed with a menu that consists of names like Holy Rings of Betazed (delicious onion rings, by the way) and Cardassian Creme Brulee. Their pizzas are even shaped like triangular shields. The decor is awesome. The cafe itself is best described in their website www.startrek.com, "Sit in the midst of a gigantic starfield, with lifesize spacecraft hovering above, while true-to-space details are everywhere, including a plasma plate wall." Even though it is moderately priced, I found it to be a bit pricey for being basic fare. Customers pay for the ambience of eating in a Star Trek themed restaurant, the way the food is served, and being greeted by costumed Star Trek characters such as Quark and an Andorian. Normally, since the food is of average quality for the cost, I would not recommend patronizing Quark's, but chatting with and having your photo taken with a Borg is, how do I put it, out of this world! I know..I know, it's touristy but honestly, it was as much fun for the adults in our group, as it was for the kids. I am recommending this place as a one-time experience for young and old alike.

A great place to unwind while you hubby goes NUMEROUS times through the star trek experience. Entrées are named after star trek characters (flaming ribs of targ... holy rings of betazed). And they have character actors who roam the dining room talking to guests... pretty cool!

Quark's is set amid the Star Trek Experience at the Las Vegas Hilton. It caters mainly to science fiction fans eager to live out their dream of having dinner and drinks on Deep Space Nine (where the 'original' Quark's Bar was located). As would be expected, the food and drinks are all Star Trek themed. The Warp Core Breach, for example, is one of the more popular drinks and comes in a massive fishbowl with steaming dry ice. The servers wear Star Trek costumes and you'll be sure to enjoy roaming Klingons, Vulcans, Ferrenghi, and other races. Quark's sits adjacant to the Star Trek gift shop, so you'll be convienently able to browse while waiting for your food to arrive. Their official website can be found here.

With the emphasis on theme, you might be surprised to learn that the drinks and food have gained a good reputation. The menu is limited, but has a variety of salads, sandwiches, pasta dishes, and hamburgers. They serve large portions of entrees that match the huge drinks. The atmosphere is more suited to groups and parties than a quiet dinner. With the unusual number of roaming staff and gawkers, it can get quite noisy. Quark's is definitely not the place to bring your loved one for a romantic date, unless they happen to be a die-hard Trekkie!

There is an actual bar at Quark's as well, so those hoping to just have a drink and soak in the scenery can be accommodated. Given the rather high prices (even for Vegas), I would advise those doing Vegas on a budget to avail themselves of the bar and split one of the over-sized drinks.

Next to the exit/entrance of Star Trek Experience. Good if you have done a few times of the Star Trek ride and busy shopping for StarTrek souvenirs. Same theme. Sometimes, someone special serves you!

Eat at Quark's!

Whenever I go to Las Vegas, I make sure to stop in and have a meal at Quark's at the Star Trek Experience at the Las Vegas Hilton. The food, American with a touch of Asian fusion, is consistently quite good, plentiful, and reasonably priced. Furthermore, Ferengi and Klingons abound, and the bartenders mix up very fine "foofy drinks" with Trek-inspired names. The waitstaff appears to be human, but members of other alien races walk about the dining area making conversation (in character) with patrons. If you are worried about being allowed to eat in peace, don't be--the aliens have a very good sense of when they their company has grown "enough." I once had a perfectly productive casual business lunch at Quark's; after a two-minute chat about the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition, the natives left us to work and enjoy the food. Alternately, I have seen alien-staff spend up to 15 minutes at a time entertaining young, enthusiastic tourists. The first time I visited Quark's, in 1996, I went because I wanted the full "Star Trek experience." Since, I've returned even without at stop at the exhibits because I love to eat the food--especially the Talaxian Turkey Wrap and the crab cakes appetizer. While I would not guide someone who hates the Star Trek shows to Quark's, don't let the name fool you--you're still eating at a Hilton. Further, Quark's is a very kid-friendly environment that has a much better grown-up menu than most other kid-friendly destinations in Las Vegas.
