Wonderful Food on a Great Patio Overlooking the Bellagio Fountains

We had dinner at Olives, one of Todd English' restaurants.

We had reservations, so we could sit out on the patio and watch the fountains. Now remember, this is December and it's COLD outside, but the patio has heaters and after a couple cocktails, you can't even feel it.

We had mostly appetizers, but one of us had an entree.

We were served a bowl of different kinds of bread, with a tray of olive tepenade and some olives as well. The focaccia was really good.

We started off with the raw oysters which I can't eat anymore cuz I got sick on them 10 years ago...and once you get sick on something like that, your body rejects it and you can never eat it again. (believe me, I've tried)

We also had the beef carpaccio which was wonderful. it was a huge mound of carpaccio on top of a piece of polenta and surrounded by cipollini onions and a roquefort crema. It was light, and tasty and the shaved parmesan was wonderful.

Our 3rd appetizer was the tuna tartar and WOW is all I have to say. The ginger glazed rock shrimp that was part of the dish was great.

On to the french onion soup which was a dissapointment to me. It was just onion broth with a crouton. if there was cheese on it...it wasn't much and I think that's a vital part of french onion soup.

On the piece de resistance....the sea scallops. YUM!
Huge sea scallops, seared and surrounded by a garlic cauliflower puree, golden raisin jam and served with a wonderful shaved fennel and arugula salad.
The dish was worth waiting for. It was wonderful...the cauliflower puree was just sweet enough and the scallops were tender and yummy.

We didn't have room for any dessert, but we thought about it.

This was a nice dinner and it was hard for me to decide what to get...always a good sign.

if you get a chance to eat here, make reservations ahead of time if you want to sit outside...especially in the summer.

It's Now a "Turn and Burn" Restaurant, Eat Elsewhere

Todd English is a total hack and sellout. At least when Wolfgang Puck does it, his food is decent. Olives is so past it's prime and making money just because it was once (a long time ago) a good place to eat. I won't bore you with all the details but will try to give you valid reasons not to eat here. I've cook for a living and started at steak houses and worked up to 5-diamond restaurants so I know a little something about food.
-This place serves poor quality, badly executed food. The pasta dishes were the worst I've had in Vegas. I was really disappointed. Pasta is the easiest, cheapest item to prepare well. They should know this.
-They pack the tables in so tight that you have little eating room, you're right on top of the diner next to you. It's really dark in there so you can't see how mushy the pasta is, or how your sauce is broken or how there's no real knife skills used in preparing your dish. You can't read the menu either, bring a flashlight.
-It's loud, bad acoustics and you can't hear your partner across the table. If you don't get a coveted table outside, you have nothing to look at. The main light source is from the mall outside which is packed with shoppers running back and forth.
-Olives has the smallest dining patio at the Bellagio which means there are only about 6 tables outside. They frown upon you going outside to watch the fountain show. Go to the Fontana Bar to watch the fountains, it only has a one drink minimum and a better view.
-The waitstaff is not fine-dining trained. They couldn't get a job at a top restaurant so you're getting the outcasts. They try to con you into thinking Olives is exclusive. They are bad salesmen and there is nothing genuine about any of the staff from the aloof hostess to the surly bartender.
-They should rename the restaurant "Eat and Get the Hell Out". The kitchen must have plates of food pre-prepared in the kitchen because our food came out before our drinks did. For those of you who don't know this.....getting your food too quickly means that it was made before you got there and is either wilting or overcooking under a heat lamp. They rush you in and out of there so they can fill the place back up again and con some more saps our of their hard earned dollars.
-Your dining dollars could go so much further at other restaurants. Feel free to email me and I will be glad to give you some recommendations or to dog out Todd English some more. He's a disgrace to the profession allowing his name to be used at a restaurant that is so bad.

Mmmmmm. This place is good. First they give you a complimentary array of what else…OLIVES. There are marinated green and black olives and also an olive tapenade and a basket of bread (but this is not ordinary bread!) to start with. Yummy! I have heard that you can request a table on the patio and have an excellent view of the Bellagio’s famed fountains but we’ve always gone without a reservation and can’t wait for the patio to become available. We had the Tuna Carpaccio to start and it was really fresh. I had the Jumbo Sea Scallops that were also really fresh. They were huge and served with a great risotto. My sister had the Salmon Flatbread (like a really thin pizza) which she loved. We were treated to excellent service and can’t wait to go back.

This is a great restaurant located at the Bellagio hotel. Reservations are recommended since this restaurant is often busy and you would have to wait quite a long time for a table. Request a window seat, overlooking the lake, if they are available so you can watch the water show during dinner. The setting, as well as the menu, has a lush Mediterranean look and feel.

Try and save room for an entrée, which is hard to do, since all of the starters are great. While I didn’t have the tuna tartare or the beef carpaccio, my dining companions raved about both appetizers. A must-have are the flatbreads. We ordered the Greek, Portabella, and Italian flatbreads. All three were flavorful and divine. My favorite was the Greek flatbread covered in hummus, tomatoes, olives, and just a touch of feta cheese. The Prosciutto cotto and provolone on the Italian seemed to explode within your mouth. The slow-braised lamb is tender and falling off the bone; it just melted in my mouth. I was less enthused with the butternut squash tortellini my friend ordered. As an appetizer portion, it would have been fine. As an entrée, it was so sweet and rich that you didn’t want more than a few bites. It’s also reasonable if you want to experience a better-quality restaurant on a budget. Drinks, appetizers, and an entrée ran us about $45 per person.

WOW... We have eaten here before the renovation, and it was good then, but now it is simply fantastic. The help goes out of their way to make you feel comfortable. I have had a few items on the menu, and each one was fantastic. Plus, as you're eating--and you can also eat outside--you have a wonderful view of the fountains at the Paris and some of the Strip. Breathtaking!! If you're coming to Vegas, make sure you eat at Olives. ENJOY!
