Philly Steak Finally

Philly Steak Finally
Quote: One of our reasons for making a trip to the East Coast - is to try the original cheesesteak! Ok - maybe not high on our list, but Pat's was a good choice with so many to choose from. The location was not within walking distance of our hotel so we took a cab. The line was long and there didn't look like any tables but quickly, it was our turn to order and a table opened up. It's outside and it was hot - but we were in Philly in June! One suggestion would be to look at the menu before getting in line as the cooks are shouting out for you to order and you felt like you better do it quick or else! Thus, we ordered the basic and it was good but next time, would add other items to make it even more tasty!

Geno's or Pat's - You Decide?

  • 5 out of 5 stars by RoBoNC from Indianapolis, Indiana

Quote: After a long day exploring the sights of Philadelphia, it was now time to satisfy my hunger. I was craving a Philly Cheesesteak so I went off in search for the best in town. The locals directed me to two places, Pat’s King of Steaks and Geno’s. Located in South Philly at the intersection of Passyunk and 9th street near the famous Italian Market, these two restaurants make up the Mecca of Cheesesteaks. Pat’s King of Steaks was formed in 1930 by Pat Olivieri and is still family run to this day. They claim to have invented the cheesesteak. As I got in line to place my order, I could smell the onions and peppers and hear the sizzling of thin slices of steak. While observing others order their sandwiches, I quickly learned to order mine like a... Read More

Quote: True Philly experience. Kids loved eating outdoors with the Pigeons (who were also dining on cheese steaks). Try the classic "steak wit wiz" (cheese steak with grilled onions and cheese whiz). Pats seems grittier and more authentic, Genos is cleaner and brighter. Pat's was busier, though, if this means anything.

Pat's

Quote: Two local Philadelphians recommended Pat's or Jim's as having the best Cheesesteaks in Philadelphia. Each had a line wrapped around the building so we chose Pat's because it was the only one of the two where we could find a place to park. The cheesesteak wasn't what I'd dreamed of but it was good (or maybe I was just starving to death). Anyway, it's a Philly tradition that I'm glad I'd taken part in.

Quote: After trying the three top locations for Philly cheesesteaks (Pat's, Geno's, and Jim's), our favorite is Pat's! The sandwich was tender, flavorful, and we wanted to take a truckload home with us! Pat's was actually the third place we tried, and we expected we'd be tired of cheesesteaks by that time, but the flavor was definitely the best, especially with the Cheez Whiz! The ordering process was fun and easy - no line, even around noon. We will definitely go back (I only wish it could be sooner, rather than later!).

Pat's King of Steaks/Geno's Steaks

Quote: Pat's King of Steaks and Geno's Steaks each claim to be the originator of the world-famous cheesesteak sandwich. I heard about both of these on the Travel Channel, and on our trip to Philadelphia, of course I wanted to try an authentic Philly cheesesteak sandwich. We drove all over side streets, down dark residential areas, until finally we saw it. Actually it is Geno's that you see first. You can't miss it; it is lit up like Christmas. Of course, we had to try them both, so me and my children got in the line for Geno's and my husband made the trip across the street to Pat's. Outside the window at Pat's where you order are even step-by-step instructions on how to order your Philly cheesesteak the proper way. Now, being so close together... Read More

Pizzacato

  • 3 out of 5 stars by digitaldan1 from Deptford, New Jersey
  • August 5, 2025
Quote: Pizzacato is one of the many small restaurants that dot Philadelphia's Market Street East area. A bit on the small side, its menu is big on taste. The menu features traditional fare such as steaks, chicken and fish. Large picture windows provide a pleasant view of one of the city's cobblestoned side streets and the occassional carriage horse passes by. Food is well-prepared and flavorful. Service is brisk, efficient and friendly. If you're in the neighborhood and looking for a meal, this is a terrific place to stop.

Quote: OK, I have come to expect hotel restaurant to be slow, but for breakfast!! It took a long time just to get coffee, and why wouldn't they just leave that mini-pot they use to serve it at our table? We ordered cereal and waited. Come to think of it, I don't think the toast that my colleague ordered ever did arrive! Our breakfast took over an hour. That was OK because it was a business discussion and we had alotted the time.

Pietro's Coal Oven Pizzeria

  • 3 out of 5 stars by kylebarber from Seattle, Washington
  • October 23, 2025
Quote: This excellent restaurant serves a great pizza, though I'd hardly call it a pizzeria. Pietro's offers a number of fine Italian entrees and pastas that looked scrumptious. But as they proudly trumpeted their title of best pizza in Philadelphia we had to go for a pie. Indeed it was good stuff, with a smart crust topped with rich tomato sauce and fresh buffalo mozzarella cheese. The roasted garlic and mushrooms were a nice adornment, but this pizza would stand tall on its own merit. I'll have to check out other pizza joints in this large Italian American city to decide if realy is the best Philly has to offer, but regardless of what conclusions I come to I'll be returning to Pietro's.

Pats/Genos Steaks

  • 4 out of 5 stars by ephraim from New York, New York

Quote: You'll find a better cheesesteak at Steve's Prince of Steaks in Northeast Philly, but you'll learn more than you ever wanted to know about Philadelphia at the corner of 9th and Passayunk between the hours of 2:30 and 3:30 a.m. Pat's -- the self-proclaimed "King of Steaks -- has been serving steak sandwiches since 1938 on the corner of 9th and Passayunk, right in the heart of South Philly. Across the street is rival and "upstart" Geno's Steaks, which has been in business since the '60s. Both joints use the same meat. Both joints use the same bread. Both joints use the same cheese (although now at Geno's you can get cheddar). But every Philadelphian has a favorite; popular opinion is probably split close to 50/50. Since Philadelphia's...
