As we were walking through Excalibur, we saw the Krispy Kreme donut shop. This was different then any other shop of this type because it was automated. as we walked up to the store, one wall of the store was all windows. You could see into the back room of the store where the employees were working. We stood at the window and watched them make donuts for quite awhile. As a person studying engineering, I was facinated by the machine they had to make perfect donuts
every time.
The process? The employees put the batter in the machine at the far end just out of view of the window. Once the dough was in the bowl it must have been forced through a hole in the bottom thus made into perfectly shaped donuts. These donuts then rode a belt through a warming oven until the dough had risen. Next came the hot oil to cook the donuts in. Metal bars separated the donuts so each cooked the same amount of time. About half way through the process, donuts were flipped over then back into the hot oil to cook the other side. Once this was done they came up out of the oil and dried to get ready for frosting. The donuts passed under a glazing machine and then rode a belt until a customer bought one. At that time a person behind the counter would pick up one of the hot fresh donuts for your enjoyment.
The whole time I watched, they only made white glazed donuts. It was fascinating to see. When we take the kids down to Vegas we will definitely go back and let them see how they make donuts! So that you are helping to pay for the machine, a dozen fresh donuts was almost $8. However they sure were good!
