Sad that It Is Gone

I stayed at the Nassau Beach Hotel back in 2004 and Cafe Johnny Canoe's was right outside the entrance to the hotel. Had many great meals and drinks there. It's sad that it is not there anymore as it was torn down to build another hotel there.

Johnny Canoes

Johnny Canoes is adjacent the Nassau Beach hotel. The food is reasonable and quite good. You can choose from a mix of Bahamian dishes, e.g., conch fritters (which are quite good), to a burger and fries if you are not feeling adventurous. They have a variety of fish and meat dishes on the menu. The prices are moderate. Thursday - Saturday the bar area is always hopping, since they have a live band.

Cafe Johnny Canoe is brightly decorated with a junkanoo theme. There are junkanoo masks on the walls.

The restaurant is a short walk from the Westwind II resort.

The menu is Bahamian with some American dishes. The entree prices run from $10 - $18 and higher.

We shared an order of Conch (pronounced conk) fritters. It's sort of like a clam fritter with chopped pieces of conch mixed in a batter and deep fried.

The Bahamian chicken and peas n' rice were big hits.

Be sure to try the Guava Duff. It's a Bahamian specialty dessert. You can get it at most restaurants on the island. We especially liked Cafe Johnny Canoe's version. Guava is a native fruit. A jam is made from the Guava. The jam is then spread on a dough like a jelly roll. The roll is then boiled. The roll is sliced and served with a sweet sauce.

Peas n' rice is quite tasty, it's made from rice with spices and a few kidney beans.

Cafe Johnny Canoe accepts Amex, MC and Visa. The cost for four of us was $70. We had mostly the lower priced entrees and shared one appetizer and one dessert. The bill could easily have reached closer to $100 if we had a more expensive entree and individual desserts.

This was one of the most fun places we visited on our trip. Johnny Canoe is located at the Nassau Beach Hotel (just next door to the Wyndham). It’s an easy walk from any Cable Beach location.

The cuisine was better than any at the more expensive places inside the Wyndham and the atmosphere was just what we were looking for (fun and festive). The prices were quite reasonable and included the tip (MOST PLACES INCLUDE A 15% SERVICE FEE, SO DON'T DOUBLE TIP). If you are looking for a great deal, head here for happy hour: two-for-one drinks.

We loved the food. Very child friendly!!!! Lot's for fussy kids to choose from, including mac and cheese! Adults had rice and peas - don't miss. It was excellent.
