Casa Blanca

Situated below the hostel of the same name is one of the best eateries in this surf and hippy hangout. Being such a popular destination on the backpacking circuit food prices are higher than in the neighbouring villages of Puerto Lopez and Manglarito. Even so, Casa Blanca turns out to be excellent value for money, offering a wide range of well prepared and unique, tasty dishes of both international and Ecuadorian flavour.

Elsewhere along the coast the majority of restaurants serve freshly caught seafood. Montanita though caters more for the international tourist and vegetarians, which sees the amount of seafood on offer drastically cut. In my opinion a positive of Casa Blanca is their choice of still including a large selection of seafood on the menu. This is served in local style, such as cerviche, cooked and served cold in onions, tomatoes and citric juice, and encocada, seafood in a sweet coconut sauce. There are also a few more extravagant dishes, such as fish covered in quaker oats and coconut and served in a curry sauce.

Old style sandwiches and burgers also grace the menu, but it's the huge selection of vegetarian dishes that proved an instant winner with my fiancee. Most dishes on the menu come with a vegetarian alternative, but it was the vegetarian curry, similar to a korma dish, recommended by the waitress that I recommend most. Not only is it delicious, but the serving size could easily feed two. Not bad for $5.

With an open front to the restaurant it means you can watch the strange ecletic mix of people walking past while eating. Seating even finding its way to the curb but considering the amount of homeless dogs in Montanita this leads to more time fending off strays than actually eating. Service is friendly and comes in nothing but the English language. I was also impressed that after waiting for 20 minutes and learning the food ordered was not available, free food was given as an apology. I thought this was a nice gesture.

Casa blanca is located in the heart of Montanita's hippy scene, just a stones throw away from the beach. Even with the lack of street names the retaurant isn't hard to find. From the main road, Ruta del Sol, walk towards the beach and take the last road on your right. Here you will be met with a mass of grass covered roofs. The Casa Blanca sign can be seen in front of you, a 50m walk away on your left.

The restaurant opens at 8am for breakfast and closes well after midnight. Food stops being served around 10pm, although this depends on the number of customers. More information can be obtained by calling 593-(0)9-9182501. The wide selection of post meal cocktails only adds to its appeal.
