Travelling for romance

Posted by RonaG on October 10, 2025

Which European city do you think is the most romantic? My husband and I are listing down places for honeymoon abroad.

Hi - I have to suggest Ljubljana. First, the name means 'beloved'. And it's the capital of Slovenia which is the only country to have the word 'love' in its name.

As for the place itself, it really is a romantic little city- the old town could be from a fairy tale with it's castle on the top of the hill overlooking the georgeous little streets. Down below, the Butcher's Bridge crosses the Ljubljanica River: the bridge has been adorned with padlocks which were left there by loved up couples. The city is full of pretty little squares and cosy cafes, perfect for a honeymoon couple to spend some time wrapped up in themselves.

You can take a day trip (or stay over) at Lake Bled, about ninety minutes away - the most impossibly pretty place in central Europe. A fairytale castle overlooks the lake from a craggy hill and in the middle of the lake there's a gorgeous little church on the teardrop shaped island. You have to take a gondola ride to the island and go into the church to ring the bell and make a wish.

When are you thinking of going?

Hopefully next year when we already have enough funds. How much do you think should we save and by what time of year? That is if we are to decide to go in Ljubljana...

Longford in Ireland is the most romantic place to visit and enjoy honeymoon breaks. Many hotels and resorts are there that provide a romantic atmosphere for couple and make their breaks wonderful.

Sorry for the delay in replying. To go to Bled you should really wait until the late spring as it does get very cold/snowy there and unless you are going for wintersports this may put you off.

It's hard to suggest a budget unless you know how long you might go for. You can stay quite cheaply and there are some good deals available at the moment. It really depends on how much you want to spend and the level of luxury you want. Feel free to message me for more info - I'm a Slovenia expert
