Late May in St. Petersburg

A May 2005 trip to St. Petersburg by KDKerr

Quote: Peter the Great envisioned St. Petersburg as a reflection of the great European cities and the primary Russian shipping port via the Baltic Sea. While Petersburg is equal in prominence to Moscow, its European-influenced architecture makes it less Russian than the country's capital.

Overview

Quote:
With only three days alloted to touring St. Petersburg, there wasn't enough time to see everything on my "to do" list. There were certainly many highlights, but there were a few places I was profoundly disappointed to miss. The Kunstkammer didn't make it onto my itinerary, but it will be the first place I visit during my next stay in the city. The Hermitage is a must, but the collection is so overwhelming that a week long visit wouldn't provide enough time to take in everything on display. If you find yourself with limited time, have a list of the most important sights to view during your visit. My next trip to the Hermitage will include a viewing of the peacock clock in action, which only occur...Read More

While observing a small sampling of St. Petersburg architecture, you will quickly notice two types of buildings--cultural sites that are lofty, ornately designed architectural masterpieces versus the more widely seen massive, low-lying concrete box design. The city's modern builders were apparently inspired by the animal kingdom maxim that "size does matter." They completely focused their attention on making things large without adding even a hint of artistic touch to the buildings. The Pulkovskaya Hotel is a modern collection of three of these gigantic structures. It is located eight kilometers from downtown St. Petersburg, and it is self-described as having international luxury-class accommoda...Read More

La Strada Best of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Quote:
La Strada is located on a side street just off Nevsky Prospekt near the Hermitage and Aleksander Column. The restaurant sits back from the street in an alcove, so it can be difficult to spot until you reach the entrance. La Strada's decor is meant to evoke the feeling of sitting at a table on a rustic Italian side street. Seating is available surrounding the pizza preparation area or on a small Florentine balcony overlooking the main floor. A semi-cylindrical glass ceiling, referred to as the crystal cupola, runs the entire length of the long, narrow restaurant. While adding natural light to the eatery's intimate atmosphere, it unfortunately creates a hot and humid climate akin to dining in a gr...Read More

Nevsky Souvenir Best of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Nevsky Souvenir - Best Store Ever!"

Quote:
I'm a bad tourist, I admit it! The first souvenir store I see after stepping into a foreign country, and I'm going to pull out my wallet and buy anything that is remotely endemic to the area. True to form, I arrived in St. Petersburg and couldn't wait to start buying Matryoshka dolls, faux-fur hats, and magnets, certain that I would never see the same thing hundreds of other places. After coming to the realization that I was going to see plenty of local handicrafts during my stay, I finally was able to get my hyperactive spending mechanism under control. For the next few days, I saw a seemingly unending supply of souvenirs exactly the same as the lot that I purchased on that first day....Read More

Gotika Best of IgoUgo

Attraction

Quote:
Public nudity and stripping are more common and acceptable in Russia when compared to the more subdued United States. There is a high likelihood of you seeing someone removing his or her clothing just about anywhere - a divey bar, a posh lounge, or on a tabletop in a raucous cafe. If you prefer a guaranteed sighting, the gentlemen's clubs in St. Petersburg are Amsterdam, Golden Dolls, or Gotika. I decided upon Gotika because it had the least expensive admission fee. Gotika sits inside of a picturesque European-style courtyard, just off Nevsky Prospekt. Open 24 hours, the private establishment is housed within a basement illuminated outside by a dark red lamp. Pressing the doorbell outside of the...Read More

St. Petersburg, Russia

Quote:
On my trip to Finland and Russia, the tour director's objective was to fit as many sightseeing opportunities as possible into each day. On the morning of my third day outside of the US, I took a brief bus tour of Helsinki's major sites before heading to the Finnish/Russian border. I was told that crossing into Russia can be an exercise in frustration. It can take as little as an hour, or it can last for half a day. Border patrol workers get paid next to nothing, so they get satisfaction providing tourists with a sample of their misery. Fortunately, my experience with the border patrol could almost be described as pleasant. My entire tour group, nearly 40 people, made it through in a snappy hour ...Read More
