Quote: After taking in the 2010 Fur Rondy in Anchorage, I knew I would have to return for the "Last Great Race on Earth". I took in all that is the Iditarod sled dog race during a five day weekend with friends from Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota.

We were very fortunate to have received this personal referral through someone on another internet travel resource given that they are about seven miles off the Parks Highway, just north of Willow in the middle of nowhere. It is the "in the middle of nowhere" that makes this such a wonderful and unique experience!Ray & Shirley Roth built Eagle Quest about six or seven years ago. With a main lodge where they live, along with the kitchen, dining area and bathrooms, this alone would make a wonderful base to call home in the summer or winter. They have also built six cabins on their property, each able to accommodate five guests in a truly rustic "dry" manner. Yes that is right, dry as...Read More

Before the race can be contested, mushers must first obtain their race number which they will wear throughout the competition on a "bib". These bibs are big collector’s items, going for as much as $5,000 after the completion of the race. In order to bring the racers and fans together, the Iditarod Trail Committee hosts their annual Mushers' Banquet in downtown Anchorage at the Dena'ina Civic and Convention Center. I heard that they estimated the crowd to be over 1,500. At $75 per person, this event also serves as a fundraiser for the Iditarod. This year, I traveled to Anchorage and met other Alaska enthusiasts from Minnesota and Michigan for this event. The three of us had a great tim...Read More

The 39th running of the Iditarod Trail Race continues as I write this trip report on my experiences this past weekend in Alaska. The race itself presents fans with two opportunities to take in the fever pitch of long distance mushing; the ceremonial start on Saturday in downtown Anchorage followed by the official race start about an hour north in Willow. We were fortunate to take in both, each exciting for different reasons. The Ceremonial Start - AnchorageThis event is largely for the fans and community, with people lining both sides of 4th Avenue for as far as the eye can see. There are additional vantage points along the trail where those with cars and a bit of local knowl...Read More

The Iditarod race trail stretches across roughly 1,150 miles of Alaskan landscape from Anchorage (well technically Willow) to Nome that pushes man and dog teams for close to two weeks or more. Started in 1973 to commemorate the primary mode of transportation for decades, along the historical trail that actually begins in Seward, today the Iditarod represents the Alaskan spirit that makes this the great place it is today. The Iditarod Headquarters in Wasilla is a nice stopping point for a break in the driving through town whether you’re heading north or south, to or from Talkeetna or perhaps Denali National Park. Inside, visitors can take the self-guided tour of the artifacts and m...Read More

Dallas and Jen Seavey are two of the Iditarod Trail Race's up and coming stars. Their stories while different are not so unique to so many in Alaska enjoying a lifestyle focused on dogs and mushing.Dallas is a third generation Iditarod musher, with his grandfather Dan Seavey and father Mitch Seavey having both competed in the "Last Great Race on Earth". Mitch won the Iditarod in 2004 while Dan's best finish was the inaugural race in 1973 when he finished third.Dallas competed in the Junior Iditarod in 2005 and turned 18 years old just days later to make him eligible to compete in that year's main race just a couple of weeks later. He is the youngest musher to compete in the ...Read More
