Black MOLD On The Walls and Curtain!

  • November 2, 2025
  • Rated 1 of 5 by a traveler from Travelocity.com
For your own health and comfort, pick a different hotel. The walls behind the curtains had so much black mold that I refused to stay in the first room. I was offered a 2nd room and it too had black mold on the curtains as well as the wall. I stayed only 1 night instead of the planned 2 because of the mold. Had it not been raining so hard and during rush hour traffic, I would have left and never stayed the 1 night. I regret not leaving, I was never comfortable in the room. Parking at the site is horrible, there is no elevator service to floors 2 and 3 of the subterranean parking. Only attempt to park here if you have a very small car. We had a Camry and even that was difficult to take the turns without backing up and taking turns in small moves.

Watch out for the mold!

I stayed in this dump on St. Patrick's Day, 2009. The bathroom was filthy - hairs all over tub, toothpaste on the wall. There was so much mold around the windows that the wall covering was peeling from the walls, The accuracy of how close the motel was to different sites was so inaccurate. I go to San Francisco at least once a month, and like to walk, but this place was soooo far from where it said. I have never stayed in a hotel or motel which portrayed itself so innaccurately. I tried to give a 1 star rating but site prevented it, (I was on the 10th floor).

Good price

This was a good deal for the price. It was a little farther from things that I wanted to see, but for the price it was worth it. The breakfast was nice, the staff friendly and the room clean.

Comfort Inn By the Bay

Location: It's in the corner of Van Ness and Lombard. It's very close to famous Lombard's Crooked Street. Check out our posted pictures.

Reservation: Placed a reservation for a room at the very top floor, instead they gave us a room on the 7th floor.

Bed: We wanted a King but they sent us to a room w/ 2 Queens. We just used the other bed to put all our stuff such as keys, watches, etc. where they were in plain sight. So it was useful after all.
Amenities: Locker safe is available but they will charge you if you use it. If you don't want to get charged for it, bring the keys back to them. Flat iron and hair dryer is available. We didn't get a sm. fridge or microwave so we're not sure if the other rooms have those.

Bathroom: Clean but very cramped.
Shampoo, etc: BYO shampoo and cond. Their soap is ok; Lotion is ok but just use your own lotion.

Ambience: It's an old hotel but it's nice and comfortable.

Breakfast: They serve continental breakfast just like any other Choice hotels do. They have a big breakfast room but it always fully packed. Eat early or eat your breakfast without a table or chair.

Service: Somebody kept taking our Do Not Disturb sign. So I asked the Lobby if I could get one. The lady behind the desk couldn't find one but promised that she'd send one to our room. Sure enough we got one.

Garage: They have an underground parking garage and a very small parking space behind the hotel. If you have a big truck or a van, they would want you to park outside.

Price: $$$ affordable
Are we coming back: Yes

1 dot - Never again.
2 dots - Only when there is no other place to stay.
3 dots - It was okay but I'll go somewhere else next time.
4 dots - We like it but there's no place like home.
5 dots - Ahh! Fit for a King and Queen.

The front desk was very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was fine although they could have used some more help to clear/clean tables. The hotel is near the bus lines, which is a definite plus in San Francisco.
Stayed here before? How was it?
