Hotel Labnah

On booking a cheap flight to Playa from Dallas, my next mission was to find a cheap and cheerful hotel; somewhere in the downtown area and, on orders from my husband, with air-conditioning.There are plenty of family run joints all along 5th Avenue (the pedestrian shopping Mecca) and it wasn’t difficult to find numerous choices online. We settled on the LabNah, after reading a glowing report on IgoUgo and were not disappointed in the least. We opted for the partial Ocean view (which was $65-high season) whilst other friends got the basic Queen ($40) and the Palapa suite ($90). All were great. The reception spoke only limited English but they were oh so patient at our limited Spanish and animated miming. They let us store our bags on the last day, which isn’t so unusual but also let us use a staff shower when we came back bedraggled from an afternoon on the beach. Our room was clean, big and bright with a private balcony and great ocean view even though it was advertised as "partial". The décor was Mayan with tiled floors and pastel linens. There was no TV or telephone but it tells you this when you book so that was no surprise. There was, however, a small hairdryer in the bathroom, shampoo, lotion etc.As far as our friends rooms, the most expensive, the Palapa had no air-conditioning but made up for it in character. A two story suite with huge palm roof, fridge, kitchenette and a balcony the size of 3 rooms….great for a little after party. The basic queen was smaller and didn’t have the balcony but instead had huge glass windows overlooking the party street. They never noticed if it got noisy as we were out well past closing, but I can imagine it wouldn’t be the best choice if early nights are your styleThe price for all the rooms included continental breakfast which though small was a great start to the day… fresh fruit, coffee, croissants, and juice. The small pool in the courtyard of the hotel was hardly used being as the hotel was only a block from the beach, but it was still nice to have even as decoration. Each balcony had vines and flowers pouring from them, giving the hotel a wonderful homely feel. The location couldn’t be beat…just steps from 5th Avenue, 3 blocks from the Cozumel ferry dock and one block from the beach. The better sands and a good 15 minute walk down the beach but the waters around the hotel were adequate for swimming and sunning.

Great location within walking (read steps, not miles) distance from the beach and to the main activities area.

You will find this place a little treasure as the prices are very reasonable (it was usd$45 for the basic room with no view); the rooms are nice, clean and roomy; showers fully work and are spotless; interior garden has a great looking pool and you can actually sleep without the noise of fifth below your window.

What do you need your hotel at Playa for? That is the main question to answer in order to choose this hotel. If you need a place between the beach and the food/shooping area, it's difficult to beat this one. You walk half a block to the beach during the day and the other half at evenings to get food, souvenirs, amd entertainment. It's also only three blocks from the bus station.

The architecture of the hotel is based on the Mayan "False" Arch which you will notice in their logo and constructins around the garden, the main door is modeled after the one found in the archeological site of Lab Nah, in the Yucatan Peninsula. The garden is small but cozzy and is designed in a way to make it more interesting while including the pool. I never used it as I prefer to swim in the ocean and lie down on the sand.

Walking from the hotel to the beach took less than five minutes and you get in a very nice zone with some beachside restaurants and bars so you don't need to walk too far to find a comfortable spot to set your towel in. At night looking for food, you won't need to walk more than 3 blocks to get all the food options you are looking for and after you get all the good bars. Perfect location whatever point of view you see it from.

Sincerely, I can't find any arguments against this place: the price is right, the location is hard to beat, and the accommodations are good.
