Tomorrow marks National Talk Like a Pirate Day. And while we probably won't be donning an eye patch and will be leaving the peg leg at home, we know plenty of places that we want to travel to to get in touch with our inner swabbie. Pirates still pose a threat to boaters and treasure hunters alike, but our pirate themed getaways are safe from danger except maybe sunburn. From the
Caribbean Sea to the Indian Ocean, pirates ghosts are said to still haunt many fishing towns that they frequented during their lives.
This island located in the Caribbean was home to bandits and buccaneers during the 1600's and 1700's. Captain Morgan used the island as him home base but the place is now uninhabited. The island had long been sought by different countries looking to colonize the Caribbean and the New World.
Numerous pirates made these islands their home. Blackbeard, Captain Morgan, and Captain Kidd all called the Virgin Islands their stronghold throughout its history. Some of their castles have even been turned into
pirate hotels in
St. Thomas.
This city has been depicted time and again in just about every pirate movie to grace the big screen. The "Richest and Wickedest City on Earth" was an outpost for many infamous pirates as they cruised around the seas and preyed on unsuspecting boats. Port Royal was largely destroyed by a earthquake in the late 17th century.
Not often thought of when referring to pirates, New Orleans was home to Jean Lafitte, the "gentlemen pirate". Lafitte's ghost is said to be wandering around Pirate Alley in the
French Quarter, as this was his base when him and his men were not attacking British fleets.
Most of pirate culture is centered around the Caribbean, but shipsmen like Thomas Tew and Henry Every outposted on this island to make the most of ships transporting goods around the Indian Ocean. Today most of the pirate culture is gone but many of the small towns have legends of the seven seas.
