Among the attractions tvordj has reviewed since her recent trip to England, one stands out for its bleakness, er, uniqueness: the so-called “plague village” of Eyam. Despite its darkly fascinating history, tvordj found it to be a “very pretty” place.
Her review Visit the Plague Village tells the story of the town’s 1665 quarantine, during which it successfully isolated the bubonic plague but lost 80% of its own villagers. Reminders of the outbreak remain—original cottages, a cemetery, a museum—but today’s Eyam is also a picturesque English town with pubs, crafts shops, and a village green to explore. Offset your plague tour with a more lighthearted lunch at the Buttery and a drink at Miner’s Arms, tvordj says, to really enjoy this “interesting place.”
