According to IgoUgo travelers, Salzburg, Austria, is “enchanting” and “spectacular”--and, we assert, spectacularly underrated. With dramatic baroque architecture defining the city and stunning lake districts surrounding it, this town steeped in The Sound of Music and the music of Mozart is, as one recent visitor says, “one of the most beautiful cities--not only in Austria, but in Europe as a whole.”
One of the highlights of Salzburg’s calendar is the Salzburg Festival, which runs from July 25 to August 30 this year, but you’re likely to run into plenty of arts programs in any season. Joy S’s new trip journal attests to this, and offers ideas for the top things to do on your visit.
Her recommendations include:
Stroll Old Town’s Getreidegasse. Photograph its famous wrought-iron signs, duck into the lovely shops, and stop for drinks at one of the many beer gardens.
Make the 10-minute drive to Hellbrunn Palace. The highlight is the trick fountains: fun, interesting, unusual, and an absolute must-see.
Take the funicular to Hohensalzburg Fortress. Enjoy wonderful views of the city and explore the castle’s nooks and crannies.
There are many more highlights in this picturesque alpine town; see 4 Days in Salzburg by Joy S for the rest of her inspiring stories, tips, and photos.
