It's kind of a travesty that so few engineers get much in the way of good press. After all, it’s only because of the work of tireless gearheads everywhere -- the kind of people who know the model of their calculator -- that cities have modern wonders like the Met or the CN Tower. Engineers make sure that everything we build is safe and pleasing to passerby, including the modern bridge -- especially the following hallmarks of beautiful cities. If you get a chance to cross over any of these marvels, bring along your camera and send us copies of the memories.
- Sydney Harbour Bridge: Our top attraction in Sydney boasts eight whole lanes of transharbor traffic, as well as a bike lane, two railroad tracks and a not-for-the-faint-hearted foot crossing. Dubbed the Coathanger by the locals, the bridge gives the visitor an unparalleled view of the city -- including the picturesque Opera House.
- Golden Gate Bridge: The not-so-unofficial symbol of San Francisco is red, gigantic and required for newcomers to the city. If you want more adventures in the Bay, try boarding the ferry to the former prison of Alcatraz.
- Brooklyn Bridge: The granddaddy of modern bridges is still an architectural marvel, and New Yorkers won’t hesitate to point this out when you visit. No matter what side you end up on, make sure to check out our favorite attractions and restaurants.
