El Gran Poder & Other Parades Worth Traveling For Photo

The Festividad Del Señor Del Gran Poder is a big deal (trust us, or read on and see for yourself). This year, our man on the ground in La Paz, Bolivia, IgoUgo member SeenThat, has gotten us a sneak preview of the grand event by snapping pics of the parade rehearsal. For those of you wondering what the Festivada Del Señor Del Gran Poder is, think combination street party and religious event. Read SeenThat's great summary of the event and watch a bit of last year's parade for a better idea of what it's all about:

The event is coming up in June and will look something like this… (all La Paz photos by SeenThat)

We love the mix of traditional and modern that always permeates the parade, most noticeable in the variety of costumes. Not planning a trip to La Paz in time for the show? Considering adding one of these other parades to your travel list.

Coney Island Mermaid parade

Saturday, June 23rd, 2012

Just funky enough to keep things interesting, this art parade of mermaids, mermen, and antique cars is more than worth the visit to the southern end of Brooklyn. Each year, a King and Queen preside over the event, and past royalty include David Byrne, Queen Latifah, and Moby.

Nova Scotia International Tattoo Parade

Sunday, July 1st, 2012

We needed a little help understanding this one, so we checked out the Tattoo's website. According to them, it features "pipes and drums, military and civilian bands, historic re-enactments, dancers, acrobats, choirs, military displays and competitions, drama, comedy and more." According to IgoUgo member grannola, the parade is the best way to get a taste of all that without paying for entrance to the Tattoo.

Mardis Gras Day Parade in Mobile, Alabama

This parade is best done when done right. If you're considering a visit, be sure to read Eric from Aiea's "Parade Going 101."

St.Patrick's Day Parade in Savannah, Georgia

Sunday, March 17th, 2013

St. Patrick's Day and the capital of Georgia seem like an odd mix, until you see how the city celebrates its patron, Saint Patrick: grandly. Next year will be 189th parade!

Parades appear to be a popular activity for IgoUgo's world travelers--understandably! Where have you enjoyed cheering from the sidelines or had the honor of marching along? Let us know in the comments!
