Iceland right now, you can join in a celebration of the first few days of summer. Sumardagurinn Fyrsti began yesterday, a celebration of the beginning of the summer on the Norse Calendar. This calendar splits the year into only two seasons- winter and summer, and the beginning of the summer starts on the first Thursday between the 19th and the 25th of April. The weather is not usually what most people think of as ‘summery’ but the Icelanders still revel in the coming season. The first day is the first of ‘Harpa’, the first summer month of the Nordic calendar. Since many winter days are sunless in extreme parts of Iceland, this day often marks the coming of the sun on the horizon. It is a public holiday in Iceland, and there are festivities throughout the country, including parades, carnivals, sporting events, and of course, no school.
