Maracas Beach

Quote: I’ve been to beaches all over the world and can easily say that this is one of my favorites. Maracas Bay sits on the north coast of Trinidad and is well protected both by its eponymous bay but also by Tobago to the northeast. To get there, you drive roughly an hour from Port of Spain (though probably a lot less without stops and not in a maxi) through the mountainous inner edge of the island along the narrow roads that are typical of the islands. The drive from Port of Spain is beautiful and once you get to the north shore, you are treated to sweeping views into peaceful valleys and, eventually out toward the sea. About 15 minutes before you reach Maracas, there is a nice overlook and rest stop. Bring your camera and a few dollars, there... Read More

Quote: Maracas Beach is the most popular beach on Trinidad, and it was pretty much the sole reason we took this day trip to Trinidad. While vacationing on Barbados, we went for one day to Trinidad to visit Maracas Beach. It is very pristine, and this is one of those locations you normally only see on postcards. The day that we were there, the sea was kind of rough and we had some rain showers, so there were not that many people on the beach. Besides that, there was a major cricket game going on that Sunday, so most people stayed home to watch TV. The drive from the airport to Maracas Beach is absolutely gorgeous. Along the way, we even got serenaded by a local. The vegetation on Trinidad was unlike anything I've ever seen before on my... Read More

Maracas Beach, Blanchesseuse

Quote: I loved this beach. The drive alone from the Port of Spain is an adventure in itself. It’s a horseshoe-shaped cove surround by large cliff-like hills. It is on the Atlantic Ocean side of the island, which is good because most Caribbean islands are only on the Caribbean, which is beautiful and blue, but has no waves. This Atlantic beach, although not crystal blue, had large waves to jump and body surf. The beach was not crowded at all. There would be room to set up a volleyball game or play Frisbee. The beach was a sandy beach, not rocky. We stayed there the entire day just jumping and playing in the waves. Remember your sunscreen. I only came out of the water once to reapply, and I was very burned!
