Stunning Gardens Make This a Wonderland

Quote: Along the shores of Biscayne Bay in the Miami neighborhood of Coconut Grove lies an intriguing destination few people are likely associate with the high glamour of Miami. It’s the Villa Vizcaya, a small piece of Europe transported and made American by a wealthy Chicago industrialist back in 1916. James Deering, much enamored of his own Grand Tour through Europe, and in particular, the villas of Italy, decided to create his own villa as a winter retreat in Florida. At the time Deering began Vizcaya, the population of Miami was little more than 10,000 people, hardly the busy metropolis it has grown to be. Seeking to create his own version of an Italianate villa with working farm and gardens on an estate of more than 180 acres (of which only... Read More

Quote: Vizcaya was built in 1914 on 80 acres overlooking the Biscayne Bay in Miami, Florida to James Deering. Mr. Deering had his estate built to look like an Old Italian Renaissance Villa. Everything on the estate was made to look old and the inside of the estate was furnished with antiquities. He lived at this location only in the winter time. Currently the remaining 50 acres of the estate is owned by Miami-Dade County and is a museum that is open to the public. Visiting the Vizcaya Gardens and Museum was an almost surreal experience. We visited on a Monday morning when there were very few people around. We were able to wander the gardens by ourselves and other than there being a few photo shoots on the grounds we were left to enjoy the... Read More

Quote: This place is amazing. I seen quite a few mansion type museums and this one takes the cake. It takes a while to walk through the entire area, but the outside is just as beautiful as the inside. I really liked the boat dock and back porch views. Early morning or late afternoon are the best times to go.

Quote: On your way to Coconut Grove you can stop at the Vizcaya Museum and Garden an Italian Villa. Formerly the state of James Deering the 10 acre villa is now a museum with 34 rooms furnished with European decorations. The use of cameras within the house is prohibited. Extensive formal gardens with pools and fountains contain sculpture from France and Italy. The museum is facing Biscayne Bay.
