My family including 2 children will be arriving at the Brisbane Cruise Terminal on a Friday on a cruise ship. How do we get from there to the city. Is taking a taxi the only option and how much will it cost? Is there a city shuttle?

Do you mean Portside Wharf is where your boat comes in? According to this site (http://www.ourbrisbane.com/see-and-do/help-for-travellers/getting-to-brisbane ), it's 4.5 km from the city centre & I'm sure there would be taxis (sorry, no idea how much it would be).
This site ( http://www.brisbanecruiseterminal.com.au/#home ) also mentions a bus and a city cat shuttle boat. Check their sites for times & prices.
I've never gone to the cruise terminal but based on my experiences in Brisbane, I'd think the City Cat would be faster & easier & pleasant. Of course it also depends where you're going once you get to the city (called the CBD)... you might need to get a cab from where the boat drops you off.
