You can't really do a review of Las Vegas - new or old - with out a mention to one of it's most visited attractions, Hoover Dam. For a structure that at the time of it's construction was the biggest concrete structure in the world - it's often easy to forget that it's a part of the Las Vegas experience.

I think in many ways the Hoover Dam is seen an attraction for the older generation, the family trip, or the hard core 'tourist.' But you shouldn't let this put you off. If your time in Las Vegas allows it, then you should get out of the bright lights of the city into the desert a bit. To fully appreciate what Vegas is, and where it has come from, the desert is the place to go. And nowhere can you get a feel for this better than on a sunrise drive out towards the Hoover Dam.

On the border between Nevada and Arizona - this gives you an extra taste of the southwest you may not get simply by flying into Las Vegas and spending your trip on the Strip. And as most people begin to have their fill of what Vegas has to offer after a few days, this little side trip out to the Hoover Dam is an excellent breather.
And besides - it is one of those things you simply need to say you have seen!

Just 30 miles south of the city on the Arizona border - you find yourself amongst one of the most impressive structures ever built. This is truly a sight for those who appreciate engineering - as in itself it's not the most picturesque thing you may visit on your trip. But the build itself is extraordinary and incredibly impressive.

This is something that you can pop past and see - get a few snap shots, breath in the desert air, wander around a bit on foot to get a good look at it and be on your way, if that is your inclination. (all with out paying a dime, I might add) or if you are more interested in the specifics, a good half a day can be spent examining this National Historical Landmark.

It's a good idea to have your own car here - just because the desert is so impressive and the drive a very nice one. The crowds and bustle of Las Vegas is quickly escaped on this route - and even in the high tourist season, once away from the Dam itself the drive returns to peace again. However - if you don't feel inclined to drive yourself, there are plenty of prepackaged bus tours that will take you from Las Vegas out to the dam itself. The winter months are much less crowded, our visit in December was a stunning one - with perfect sunny weather (not too hot) and with out the heavy crowds.

Allow a few hours to sight see the place in full - especially in the high tourist season.

It is worth mentioning that doing a full tour is rather pricey - so I recommend doing this if only if you are very interested in the inner workings and are excited about this engineering feat. The full tour costs around $30US and there is also a parking fee of $7. You can get a very good view of the dam outside, park in an outside car park and wander around on foot for free - a good option I feel if you are interested in seeing the sight, or in a hurry on your way into or out of Las Vegas. Beware the Time Share

Designed around a well known New York Mexican Restaurant, Gonzalez y Gonzalez in New York, New York in Las Vegas is a nice addition to the multi-cultural feel that the hotel offers.

Located in the midst of the 'historic' district of New York food dining area of the hotel, you could almost miss this little restaurant as the drama around the many, many other restaurants can be somewhat more appealing.

But a hint of Old Vegas survives here for me, as somewhere in the midst of the old brick buildings that make up the scenery here, the little old Irish pubs and Italian pizzerias the sense of MGM and their domination over the strip gets a little less prominent.

Perhaps this is because New York, New York felt kind of commercial with a tendency towards the family tourist 7 years ago, too - and it only managed to keep this feeling as New Vegas descended. But in this at least it still felt somewhat true to itself, which is more than I can say for most of the other hotels on the strip.

And here in it's midst, you find a little Mexican Restaurant called Gonzalez y Gonzalez. The restaurant in New York which is it's namesake is known for it's live music and lively atmosphere - something that may also be the case in Las Vegas in the evening. Apparently they have late night music sessions here, and when I did pass in the evening the entire place was hopping.

However, I managed to stumble across it on a hungry week day afternoon, with a desire to escape the throngs of families and the busy casino floor.
The restaurant was rather quiet, and myself and friends sat down to a very reasonably priced menu with some tasty food in a quiet, partially filled room with football on the TV in the corner.

We ordered some beer and enjoyed basket after basket of free chips and dips while we looked through the menu. The staff were decent - perhaps not what I would have expected from a Las Vegas restaurant a few years ago, but still perfectly decent and in no way as dismissive, tired and uninterested as in many of the restaurants we visited in Excalibur and the Luxor.

The menu wasn't mind blowing - but it was very decent. After years abroad, my appetite for Mexican food was at it's absolute peak - and I made a point of trying many different styles and restaurants that offered it in 3 western states.

There were a few interesting things on the menu - I recommend the pazole soup, a delicious Mexican dish cooked with pork and hominy. It's not quite the caliber I had when it was home cooked as a child in New Mexico, but it was still tasty and a nice reminder of the old days. The chicken tortilla soup was also very nice.

All in all we were happy with our experience here - there was seating inside away from the 'street' in New York, New York which was often reserved for only the more expensive restaurants. It's lively at night, quiet in the day and in general a nice place to stop in between trips to the poker tables. Read Less

After our week that was largely disillusionment with the Las Vegas we remembered and the new strange MGM built theme park of a place, we found a spectacular and unexpected repose in a new off-the-beaten track hotel that we may not have actually heard about had we not had to venture down away from the strip to find the hoax of a free meal we were offered by the timeshare group.

It's a strange, though shiny and new hotel - it is definitely off the strip so if you are with out a car getting out there might be a bit tricky. But with a car - especially at midnight - it's a pleasant and easy 15 minute drive from the center of the strip.

The hotel is big, and in an area that is only just now being developed, so there is plenty of quiet parking, and it's easy to remember once again that you are in the middle of the Nevada desert, and things feel a bit more as they should.

When we were there on Thanksgiving week, the hotel was all but empty. We walked through the clean, new though not decadent hallways that with a hint of western feel to the decor feeling an enormous sense of relief that people were getting on with things in their small groups, actually gambling and we were beset by very few baby buggies and no small children running amongst our feet.

We came down to have a go at their Midnight Bowling, which they advertised at $1 a game, and $1 beer to boot. The beer was awful, it must be said, but then hey - it was $1 and we were bowling. None of us complained.

The lanes were fantastic. All but brand new, highly polished, very clean and just waiting to be bowled. It's very streamlined and has a warm, hometown alley feel to it with out being run down or cheesy. Only a few others came and bowled while we had our three games that ran on into the early hours of the Nevada morning - but the atmosphere was great. We were really very happy we made the effort to go out - and it ended up being one of the best nights we spent in Vegas on this trip. It was well worth $1 a game, and if you haven't done Midnight Bowling in Las Vegas, well - then obviously you haven't lived. Read Less

But at least what has replaced it are some very classy, well designed restaurants with brilliant food, and for that I was very pleased and impressed. And Isla was certainly one of these.

Isla Mexican Kitchen - located in the Treasure Island hotel and casino is one of those great examples of an upscale restaurant that you can relax into. The atmosphere and setting is very nice bordering in authentic but certainly not a theme restaurant. Low lit and atmospheric, there is still a nice sense of style to the place and you leave not unhappy at the money you have inevitably spent.

It's not an extremely pricey restaurant, either - the average bill per person being around $35 US. And if you did end up being swindled into going along on a time share talk and did actually get the meal vouchers they promise, this is one of the restaurants that was actually very good you could use many of them at.

I was extremely pleased with our evening at Isla.
A group of us came across after watching Phantom at the Venetian across the street. We wanted a nice night out and some good food after the show, but wanted something relaxed and comfortable as well with out the extremely high prices of many of the other classy restaurants.

And for that it was perfect. I do recommend that you book in advance for an evening meal, it's not a huge restaurant and it seemed to be pretty popular. But we were seated immediately and instantly felt comfortable in the surroundings and with our meal.

The waitress was very helpful and extremely knowledgeable about their menu and selections. They have a huge range of tequilas, and some very interesting Mexican beer. I highly recommend that you find a beverage on the menu you've never tried before to accompany your meal.

The food was excellent. They refer to it as 'modern Mexican' which I think is actually a pretty good description. They have an award winning chef who has taken many classic dishes and given them a slightly new twist and all of the food was presented beautifully. And our friends who joined us had the steak, which was stunningly cooked.

There is also a Tequila bar where they have on offer more than 100 types of tequila, and again the staff were very knowledgeable about them all.

This is a great place for a casual/nice night out for a group or even just a couple. Not quite as family friendly as many other restaurants now are in Las Vegas, but highly recommended. Read Less

It's not quite as easy as it seems to review The Stratosphere hotel on my second visit to Las Vegas amidst all of the 'New Vegas' additions.
In tribute to our original visit, we had decided to spend our week split between either end of the strip - half at the Excalibur and the other half at the Stratosphere. This was an excellent idea the last time as it gave us a full, well rounded experience of the strip (as one end is significantly different than the other) and still allowed us to do a lot of walking around without the enormous hike that would be going from one end to the other.

On our last visit, the Stratosphere was the cheaper option (and the second half of the week when money was running low...) and wasn't as impressive as the hotels at the other end. However, it was still quite nice, very clean and had some great restaurants and shows.

This time - this time it was a little bit different.
The price was still very cheap - and much cheaper than we found anywhere else on the strip. The room, however - were very dated and not especially well kept. In fact, I'm certain the entire hotel was in exactly the same decor it was when I visited 7 years ago. It even had that feeling of being 'left behind' almost as if it had been a decent little hotel who's owner wandered off and left it as it was to fend for itself.

It was, actually, a little bit depressing.
And perhaps the biggest benefit for staying there (other than the cheap price) was the enjoyment of the opposite end of the strip which this time was a horrible place to be.

On our last visit we walked the strip in the middle of the night with no worries or the slightest hint of it being unsafe - but I actively did not want to venture out late in the evening at that end of the strip this time. And the driving was so mad that we were both very stressed out and angry by the time we actually got to the hotel and parked in the slightly dodgy carpark alongside it. That feeling of Safety and Being Looked After was something that really impressed and surprised me on my first visit to Vegas - and it might have been the single most notable change.

That end of the strip - while not built up and a little more low-rent before, felt actively run down this time and wasn't especially pleasant.

However - having said all of that, the Stratosphere did offer a hint of Old Vegas I didn't get anywhere else, and that was in the service. It wasn't impeccable - not of the caliber it was on my last visit, but it was much better than anywhere else we were outside of The Venetian, which was a pleasant surprise. We were actively welcomed into the hotel by pleasant (if slightly bedraggled looking) staff who were helpful throughout. Which is much much more than I can say for the Excalibur.

And also - being away from the MGM conglomerate machine that runs the other side of Vegas was a huge relief for the few days that we were there. Everything wasn't exactly the same as in every other hotel, and we weren't battered at every corner by pushy, annoying salesmen trying to con us into buying timeshare.

For the price - the Stratosphere isn't bad, but it does feel worn and tired and there is none of the Vegas glitz I remember so fondly. Read Less

The first time I came to Las Vegas,the Excalibur was the first of the two glorious hotels I stayed in in what quickly became one of my favourite cities, and so it has a lot of sentimental value.

When I decided to come back to Vegas for Thanksgiving week in 2008, I couldn't resist the temptation to spend the first couple of days in a place filled with so many good memories. And it didn't hurt that it seemed to be the only hotel offering a really good Thanksgiving deal - a price that was pretty cheap for a holiday week.

However, when I arrived I found something very different to what I experienced last time.
Though always a little cheesy with it's enormous castle exterior and themed interior - Excalibur Hotel and Casino was still a traditional Las Vegas casino on my first visit. Primarily with excellent service, plenty of very nice, excellent kept rooms and good gaming space. This - even with it's themed style and cheaply priced rooms, was a very nice hotel.

This visit was so different that I can pretty safely say I will never stay there again. It was a pretty bad experience from start to finish. The staff weren't just less attentive and on the ball than last time - they were down right rude and dismissive. It was like waiting in a theme park ride line most of the time you wanted to speak to someone. We had to change rooms one night because of the family next door with the screaming baby that was keeping us up all night, and the staff were dismissive almost to the point of being surly.
Worse though - the place was just badly taken care of. There were scowling maids and workmen wandering around the hotel and casino - not out of sight or friendly as they used to be. The place was also kind of filthy. The whole hotel smelled of smoke and trash seemed to be just left on the floors. It didn't feel clean - let alone spotless as it was before. One of the nights we stayed in one of the renovated floors - which was nicer than the others, but even so it went at least 2 days without being vacuumed. We watched a gummy bear on the floor of an elevator for 3 days waiting to see if and when it would be picked up. It was still there when we left the hotel.

But above this generally lower standard were two major problems, and both were the reason I will never stay here again.
The first is that for some reason - Las Vegas seems to have become a 'family' destination. And even though it's suppose to be illegal for anyone under 18 to be on the gaming floor (something that was vigorously watched when I was last there in all casinos) it seems now that of the MGM Grand Casinos this is utterly dismissed. Most of the time (regardless of the time of day or night) I was on the gaming floor I was surrounded by children running around playing between the tables, or dodging baby buggies. Maybe it's just me - but I think there's something really distasteful about a place that is serving booze by half naked women to a craps table where half the people playing have a baby buggy parked next to them and toddlers playing on the floor.
It was odd, and really not what I look for in a gambling environment.

This of course extended beyond the gaming area, and it was like being in a kid's theme park. The swimming pools and all the recreational areas were filled with small children, as were the restaurants and shops. Not to mention the sound of babies crying seemed to be inevitable in any room we stayed in.

But - even more than that was the problem I had with the Time Share salesmen. If you have been to any of these kinds of destinations in the US recently you have probably experienced this horrible new 'time share selling' technique hotels have taken up. I now refuse to stay anywhere that does this, but it seems almost impossible to avoid in Las Vegas. (See my review on Time shares for more information)
But worse than the fact that they had annoying sales pitch people stopping their own guests INSIDE their hotel - was the methods that they undertook to do so.

On first arriving at the hotel at 11 pm after flying into LAX from New Zealand and then driving all the way to Vegas - we were stopped by a woman in an Excalibur Hotel Staff Uniform asking us how many nights we were staying. When we said 3 she took us over to an Excalibur desk and told the man at the counter to 'comp these guys.' (Her exact words)
Now - in Las Vegas five years ago that would have actually meant something. In short, we were flat out lied to about the entire matter. We were told we were going to be given a free breakfast at another hotel as a promotion and would be given $50 worth of meal vouchers.
It wasn't until we arrived there that we realized that it wasn't a hotel, it wasn't a free breakfast, and it wasn't exactly free meal vouchers - it was a run down office where we were carted off to other rooms and given a hard sale pitch about time share for 3 hours. 3 hours! It was all a sham - we didn't even get breakfast - we were given a donut and a bad machine coffee if we wanted it while they pitched us. And it was all done in the name of Excalibur.
Now, the Time share people are in every MGM Grand hotel in Las Vegas (so almost every hotel on the strip) but I can't say what tactics they use in other hotels. Just that I was ripped off entirely by them on my stay in Excalibur, and for that alone I can not ever stay there again, and would not recommend it. Read Less

If you're going to have Thanksgiving in Las Vegas - the most important thing to decide is where to eat. Luckily for us we had almost an entire week in the city to try out a lot of places, so Thanksgiving dinner was all about the turkey.

Well - at least it was about finding the best place that I could eat like I do at home on Thanksgiving...

We arrived in Las Vegas after a spending a year in New Zealand, and since I've been living in the UK, it had been almost 4 years since I'd had a real, all American Thanksgiving dinner. It had to be huge, and it had to have all the trimmings.

I am sure there are a lot of places in Las Vegas where you can enjoy a real Thanksgiving meal, but for us the choice was simple. If you're going to eat Thanksgiving dinner in Las Vegas - then you have to do it in the biggest buffet in Las Vegas.

The Excalibur Hotel Buffet was a pretty easy choice. We ate there when we were in Las Vegas the first time and remembered it fondly. And more importantly - we knew we'd leave with trousers too tight and stuffed with turkey and pumpkin pie.

And in that regard it wasn't in the least bit disappointing. The general quality of all things Excalibur has gone down hill drastically since I stayed there 5 years ago, and with new Vegas seemingly now being a 'family' destination - The Excalibur hotel seemed to be kid-central.
This too was true of the buffet - however if you get there early you get the best of everything. We arrived around 1 pm and the buffet was only about a third full, all the food was freshly prepared (and very tasty, I must say) and all in all we were very pleased with our meal. But by 3 - about the time we were dragging ourselves away from that last slice of pie - the room was crammed with families having their Thanksgiving dinner, and there were more than a couple of tables who's children seemed to be getting full run of the restaurant.

All this would have been less of an issue if the price of the buffet hadn't risen so much from our last visit. My wistful memories of the glorious days of the cheap Las Vegas buffet have vanished, I'm afraid - and in it's place are some extremely over priced restaurants with sub-standard food. The buffet I remembered being of such a wonderful value was now $16 for lunch - an amount I wouldn't have wanted to pay for a normal day.

However - I can't complain about the Thanksgiving Buffet at the Excalibur - it was wonderful. Table after table of everything you associate with Thanksgiving. Turkey and potatoes of many different varieties, dressing, three kinds of gravy row upon row of freshly cooked vegetables, rolls, cornbread, sweet potatoes...our plates were piled high before we even got to the salad or the soup, and I had to walk past two rows of other options like Mexican and Chinese with out even looking because I simply had no more room.
And the desert trays seemed to go on for miles. Any kind of pie you can imagine was available - including low fat - and I did try at least two before my stomach demanded I call it a day.

If you are in Las Vegas on a family holiday then this is definitely the place to go. And if not - go early and you can still get a great meal for the day. Even better, it leaves you plenty of time to stroll along the strip to walk off some of your indulgence, or you can go back to the hotel room and nap away a sunny desert afternoon.
