One of the largest museums in the city, and even in the world, this massive collection of exhibits is one of the must-sees of the city. Known for catering to children of all ages, there is something for everyone at the American Museum of Natural History.

Located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, this museum is a series of 25 buildings displaying everything from African Mammals, meteorites, and gemstones to the famous dinosaur exhibit with the giant T-Rex and the popular Egyptian display. One could spend a week in this museum alone just discovering all the information it offers one to soak up!

We however only had an afternoon, and had to pick which of the exhibits were high on the list to see and skip some others. Unfortunately we went on a Saturday which is very busy and seemed to have an entire population of children running around..although kids are a mainstay here as even through the week many schools offer field trips and lectures in the halls. Be prepared to have to navigate through many many little bodies, especially in the mammal exhibit (ahem...Night at the Museum!).

We started our time there by grabbing a quick lunch in the downstairs cafe, which is laid out like a cafeteria style restaurant with various stations of self-service dishes. We ate quickly so we could get to the exhibits. Be sure to grab a map, and decide where you want to go, and the most efficient route between those points before you start wandering around. This place is so massive that you'll probably get lost at one point anyway, but at least you may not wander in circles too long if you have a plan from the start.

The Egyptian exhibit along with the dinosaurs and Hall of Human Origins were the main stops on our self-guided tour. Overwhelming and beyond interesting doesn't begin to sum up the plethora of information housed within these walls - it's pretty incredible to see everything that has taken place of the history of this planet.

We barely scratched the surface before we had to leave - and definitely plan on returning! Don't miss this!

Recently I had the opportunity to go to the Whitney Museum on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. I've always said that the MoMA is one of my most favorite museums in the world - with my interest in modern art. But a good friend of mine, after hearing me say this, challenged me to check out the Whitney as he said it was one of the best modern art collections out there.

Unlike the MoMA, the Whitney caters to American modern art, and is also more transient in the collection on display. Located off Madison Avenue and 75th Street, the Whitney is an attractive building of modern architecture and offers ever-changing exhibitions from present and past American artists.

The permanent collection contains over 18,000 pieces, including pieces from artists like Gorky, Hopper, Jasper Johns, Motherwell, de Kooning, and Warhol - just to name a few. I was excited to see what awaited, but have to say that I definitely wasn't as impressed with the exhibitions as I'd hoped. (Of course, this can happen at any museum depending on the pieces on display at the time of visit - and I feel like I'll give the Whitney another shot in the future).

There are several floors of a pretty straight-forward arrangement of curation. There were a few special exhibitions of interest, and on the Friday night that we visited, there was a live folk band playing in the lower level.

One thing that wasn't very "museum-like" in my mind and very much took away from the experience, was the loud live music in the non-acoustically pleasant lobby. It just felt like a big hectic mayhem of people and noise when we entered and even still while trying to view the first floor exhibitions. Quickly we ran toward the elevators just to rise above the chaos.

If you're a modern art lover, I definitely say to make a stop at the Whitney, and perhaps a time other than a Friday night would be more of a calming experience!

Taking up a massive front along the eastern side of Central Park, along the section of 5th Avenue referred to as "Museum Mile", this museum is one of the city's most visited attractions each year. There are 19 sections of the interior spanning from ancient Egyptian and Renaissance, to Greek and Modern American. Because it's so large, many people just pick out the sections of highest interest to them and plan to see those only, as an entire tour may be too overwhelming in one visit.

Be sure to pick up a map at the information table by the ticketing counters in the lobby. Stop for a little bit to plan your route, as after you're inside it's easy to get lost. If you do though (as I did numerous times), there are always workers in every room to ask for help. The three areas that I explored were the modern art collection, the Greek sculpture room, and the huge Egyptian display. It's quite extraordinary how much space is filled here with priceless gems of the art world. The Egyptian collection is world renowned and holds an entire temple structure in this glassed atrium-like space.

Pages of a review could be written about this museum, it's history and collection, but needless to say, it's a top recommendation for a visit to NYC. It's a place one must see for themselves and experience what they want to take away from it on their own. Don't let yourself get too bogged down with trying to fit too much in, but pick out several areas or pieces you'd like to see, go see them, take your time, and save the rest for another visit.

During the warmer months (weather permitting), the museum offers "Evenings at the Met". Held on Saturday evenings during the extended hours, the rooftop martini bar is opened for guests to enjoy a seasonal cocktail while mingling around an outdoor sculpture exhibited overlooking the view of the city. This is free with museum admission, and is usually accompanied by a musical ensemble.

One of my most favorite museums in the world is the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City. I'm not alone in thinking this as it's been long hailed by art critics around the globe as one of the best collections of influential modern art in existence. Not only is the art collection world-class, but the special exhibitions and building itself are totally worth a visit.

Located in the heart of midtown on 53rd Street between 5th and 6th Avenues, this museum went through a major renovation between 2002-2004 and was closed to the public during this time. Now reopened and better than ever, the MOMA now offers visitors over twice the original space and is housed in 630,000 square feet on six floors. Natural lighting through various open atriums, courtyards and exhibition rooms are displayed through many glass openings, allowing the space to appear as a piece of modern art itself.

When you enter, famous art pieces from the world over reside in expansive wall space giving the viewer adequate and intimate viewing capabilities. Spend some time in the lovely sculpture garden before heading up the stairs to the floors above. For modern art-lovers this collection is one surpise after another. I was so thrilled to see van Gogh, Picasso, Dali', Warhol, Newman, Pollack, and Bacon all displayed before me. The names of works are unending, and some of the stars of modern thinking are housed here. From Pollack's "Number 31" to Warhol's "Cambell's Soup Cans" and "Starry Night" by van Gogh to "Monument to Balzac" by Rodin...paintings and sculptures are abundant.

Don't forget the photography, design, and film collections, as well as various special exhibitions every month. You can spend hours in here learning about and looking through the masterpieces. The best time to go to be almost alone in the space, and definitely feel more free to view the pieces uncrowded is in the mornings of the weekdays. But for those on a budget, definitely check out the Free Friday Nights sponsored by Target, where from 4-8pm the $20 admission fee is waived and the doors are open! Even if there's a line (sometimes stretching around the block), don't worry, as it moves quite fast. When you've seen as much as you can take in, visit the gift shop for some poster prints or sip a coffee at one of the few cafes and restaurants onsite.

As a student of art, and fan of Frank Lloyd Wright, I was especially excited to see just the building itself. We walked through the Upper East Side and when we approached the park at 89th Street, I began to see the white spiraling levels of the building peaking through a row of trees...I couldn't believe I hadn't visited earlier. It's a striking building by Frank Lloyd Wright and is an awesome piece of art without ever having to step inside. But, luckily we did step inside, and it became even better.

The first level of the museum is open to the public, and if you don't have much time and/or don't want to pay the admission fee, then it's definitely worth it just to step inside and take a gander. The atrium level is one of the best views of the spiraling levels of the interior and quite an amazing and relaxing place to enjoy some people-watching.

We paid the $18 admission fee and picked up our brochures and the free audio guide set, and began the journey. During the time we visited, the special exhibit was titled "Haunted" and there was a great video/sound piece in the lobby. We then, started the spiraling walkway up the various floors. *Photos aren't allowed past the lobby level.

The audio guide is very thorough and assisted us to understand the layout, architecture, special and permanent exhibits. I thought the range of pieces shown was worth the visit for sure, but the highlight was exploring the building itself. We ended up staying about 2 hours until the museum closed it's doors.
