Great Budget Hotel in Central Milan

  • January 27, 2025
  • Rated 4 of 5 by henrik_rrb from Gothenburg, Sweden

It's not easy to find a low cost hotel in the central parts of Milan, but Hotel Arno/Hotel Eva is one of the best available. A quick 7-8 minute walk from the Stazione Centrale and you're there, welcomed by the very friendly owner, Patrizio.

*Location and how to get there*
Very centrally located 1* hotel, convenient for everyone who wants to explore Milan during a few days. The hotel is right between the Central station, and the shopping street Corso Buenos Aires. That means that apart from trains and shopping all three metro lines are also close by. A walk to Il Duomo and the shopping streets around there won't take more than 20 minutes.

From the train station you just walk over the big piazza (Piazza Duca d'Aosta). Walk towards the big McDonalds restaurant, and then follow the street (Via Napo Torriani) to the left after passing the famous M. Continue straight on for about 5-600 meters, passing by a nice little church on the way. Then you'll reach a new small square with two streets (Piazza Cincinnato). Just walk straight over it, and you'll have Via Lazzaretto on your right. Look up for the white sign saying "Hotel Eva" with red letters.

*Area*
During the day the streets around the hotel are pretty nice, with small shops and restaurants. Among them a café less than 100 meters away from Hotel Arno, where it's a good choice to eat breakfast. For those who needs more money there are also two ATM just around the corner.
During the evening and nights the surrounding streets gets a bit more shady, and if walking the streets from the Central Station there is a risk you'll bump into prostitutes.
I've never been scared or threatened though, as the streets are generally safe.

*Hotel*:
Hotel Arno is since long owned by the Napoli born Patrizio. An incredibly friendly south italian, who a few years into the new millennium got the chance to buy the Hotel Eva next door too. He's now running both 1* hotels.
First time I stayed at Hotel Arno was back in 2000, when me and my brother came to Milan and by pure luck found the hotel, walking straight into it. We stayed two nights and were very happy with both the hotel and the friendly owner.
Almost a year later I came back again, alone this time. And Patrizio's first words were "Welcome back! But where is your brother??".
It was hard to not feel welcome when being remembered after so long time.

Thanks to the fact that it's now the same owner of both hotels it's also easier to get a room there. I've never been told "sorry, it's full" at Arno, despite booking late many times.

*Scary elevator*
The only scary thing about this hotel is the elevator that brings the guests up to the 4th floor. It's so small that it's hard to find space for one person and a suitcase. That the entrance door and the exit door are on different sides of the elevator doesn't help either. But for those with a phobia for small areas there is also stairs.

*Reception*
The reception is right outside the elevator, and there is also a space behind the desk where guests can sit down and watch tv or use internet for free. There is no breakfast served at the hotel, and there is neither a restaurant for lunch or dinner. For thirsty guests there is a drink vending machine with water, coca-cola, lemon tea and more. Being a budget hotel of course also the drink prices are at the same level.

When leaving the hotel for a late night out in Milan it's important to ask the receptionist for the night key. Without that, one will have to use the door bell at street level when returning, and by doing so also waking up the whole hotel.

*Rooms*
There are different possibilities when choosing a room at Hotel Arno/Eva. Single and double rooms, with either a double or twin beds. Next choice is if one wants bathroom and shower in the room,or out in the corridor.
Each room has a hand basin, a small tv with italian channels (quite often the television antenna seem to have some problem though, as the picture can be both blurry and in black and white).

Rooms are simple, but very clean and welcoming. The same goes for bathroom and shower which works better than at many other hotels with more stars in Milan. Try to get a room away from the street, as the trams passing outside early in the morning aren't exactly silent.
Beds are comfy and quite soft, and there are extra covers if it's too cold.
There is no aircondition but a fan if needed. So far I have never had to use that though. The walls aren't very soundproof, although in the evenings I've never had problems sleeping. Worse in the morning when early leaving guests can make it quite hard to sleep late.
There is no real view to talk about, either over the roof the houses next door, or over Via Lazzaretto. Specially in the summer it's important to close the window before leaving the room or turning on the lights, as your night sleep otherwise will be widely disturbed by mosquitos.

*Price*
Prices changes depending on season, but normally I pay 55 euro for a double room with bathroom. For a room with the bathroom in the corridor it's usually around 10 euro cheaper.

It's a very good price for a hotel in a city where it often doesn't differ so much in quality between a 1* and a 3* hotel. Biggest difference is instead the price.

Hotel Arno/Milan

Hotel Arno
Via Lazzaretto 17
Milan

There is no shortage of hotels in Milan. Most people who visit Milan are businessmen and visitors to Milan Fair. That's why it was slightly difficult to find budget accommodation.

We found Hotel Arno to be a true gem. It is a short walk from the Central Train Station and about 10 minutes on foot to the Duomo.

HOW TO GET THERE (from the railway station): Leave the station at the main entrance.
Cross Piazzale Duca D'Aosta.
Take Via Nappo Torriani until you get to the second roundabout.
Via Lazzaretto is on the right. It is the street with the tram rails.
Hotel Arno at number 17 is on your right.

The hotel is on the fourth floor, and there is no outward sign to show that this is a hotel. Simply press the button that says Hotel Arno. (On the same floor is Hotel Eva, which has no en-suite rooms).

WHAT THE ROOM IS LIKE: Our room was at the back, which meant less noise, especially as the tram passes through Via Lazaretto. It was spacious, with twin beds and the usual hotel furnishings. There were sufficient reading lamps and sockets. Bring an adaptor, because they are the Mediterranean type, as the prongs of the plug are closer together than the standard European type.

The large en suite bathroom with sufficient bath towels and constant hot water.

These days, budget rooms also have televisions. And our Italian improved greatly, as there were only Italian channels. There is no air-conditioning, but a fan and the granite floor make the room cool in summer. The view from the window was of other apartments and balconies, with lots of flowers and, down below, a courtyard, but all far enough so that privacy is guaranteed. Close the shutters before you go out, as the room catches the afternoon sun.

SERVICE: Hotel Arno is up four flights of stairs, but there is a lift if you think this is too strenuous. The manager is from Livorno (south of Naples) and welcomed us with southern hospitality.

Behind the manager's desk is a small lounge with a coffee vending machine. It is a good place to sit and chat with other guests.

PRICE: We paid 55€ for a double room, and this included 30 minutes Internet access.
