Two IgoUgo members put their heads together to hone in on the correct location of these statues in record time.
The stone carvings were photographed on the island of Kyushu in Japan by scientistseeking when the physicist spied them on a bike and hike tour last summer.
Idler, who also visited Japan recently, was the first to guess correctly, saying, “There's a tradition of mountain path pilgrimage routes in many places in Japan, and such routes often feature shrines and statues for contemplation. This ‘mountain worship’ is an interesting blend of native Shinto beliefs grafted onto Buddhism.”
One last shout-out goes to GB from Devizes for refining Idler’s guess even further to name the sentries’ exact location.
