In three new journals from a trip that encompassed both Ireland and Northern Ireland, IgoUgo foursome travelswithkids does Dublin on a budget, explores modern history in Londonderry, and traipses through ruins older than the Great Pyramid of Giza. Plus, they introduce us to the rest of the family as they trace their ancestors to Irish towns, farms, and cemeteries.

Along with many reviews’ worth of great tips for touring Ireland, travelswithkids doles out wisdom for tracking your own ancestors abroad, including:

  • Do your research from home beforehand. Digging through records, following leads, and writing letters and receiving replies all take time you probably won't have while on your trip.
  • Check to see if earlier generations have done some investigating already; you just might find some existing notes.
  • For Irish families, invaluable resources include Griffith’s Valuation and maps from the Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland.

In Ireland, the family says, “you can't drive 10 miles without encountering something worth stopping to see.” That’s kind of how we feel about their journals, so be sure to seek more tips in Family Weekend in Dublin, Traipsing Through Irish History, and Ireland’s North Coast.
