Our Traveler of the Week’s trip to Vail, Colorado made Robin Leach’s voice introducing “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” ring in our ears--those of us that can remember it, anyway. We often think of Vail, Colorado as a place for only such lifestyles, but Barbara proved it’s more than that in her New Year’s in Vail journal. She explains, “we are neither rich nor famous nor foreign, but we splurged for Christmas.” She and her family found that despite--or because of--its expense, the Vail Ski Resort has much to recommend to families into winter sports: “Are there tree runs? Of course. Moguls? No problem. Steep and fast? Loads of trails fit this description. Extreme terrain? Yep. Gentle runs? You bet’cha.”
The offerings of Vail extend beyond ripping down the mountain, as Barbara writes that “from fine dining to Subway (!!)… you’ll find it at the base of the mountain.” There was a variety of restaurants and shopping and the many activities planned by the Vail community "such as the fire dancers and disco ice skating that were part of a free family fun festival in Lionshead Village on New Year's Eve. A torch ski-down and fireworks were also fun to watch."
From the Vail Ski Resort, to their stay at the Vail Marriott Mountain Resort, to their 16-year-old son's experience at the Vail Ski and Snowboard School, this is a great blueprint for dreaming up ideas about your next year's Christmas or New Year's vacation.
