Lately, I’ve had penguins on my mind. Is it because of Earth Day? Perhaps I am anticipating the Mr. Popper’s Penguins movie. No, I have to admit, it’s that cute video circulating of Cookie, the ticklish penguin from the Cincinnati Zoo.

From jumbo-size Emperor Penguins to the tiny Little Blue Penguin, our members have seen them all. So where can you go to tickle your own penguin? Here are four penguin colonies visited by our intrepid travelers.

  • Boulders Beach Penguin Colony: On Boulders Beach, South Africa, you can swim with the penguins. Catsholiday said “this is a memory that will be in my top experiences” and thoroughly recommends it. “One little chap was having a head rolling conversation with my son.”

  • Philip Island Penguin Parade: The Penguin Parade on Phillip island is Australia’s most popular wildlife attraction. At sunset, Little Penguins (once called fairy penguins) only a foot tall, parade across the beach to their sand burrows.
    Member jdumoulin described the Penguin Parade experience. “You'll see literally hundreds of penguins waddle up the beach past you into the dunes. It's quite a sight. It's also quite loud as they make loud crying noises when a penguin goes into their neighbor's burrow by accident!”

  • Punta Tombo Penguin Reserve: This Magellan Penguin Reserve in Argentina sees up to one million penguins between September and the Spring. Sandy Goes said: “Being able to walk so freely among the penguins was magical and an experience of a lifetime.”
