Located on the large Grand Bahama Island, Freeport’s rich waters, beautiful reefs and subtropical climate have made it a popular destination for divers, beach bums and families alike.
The waters off Freeport are packed with wildlife, from dolphins to octopus to sea turtles and sharks, and there’s no better place to see them all than at Dead Man’s Reef. Named for the large number of ships it sank in the 18th century, Dead Man’s Reef is one of the most popular snorkeling destinations in the Bahama, frequented by snorkel tours like Pat and Diane Fantasia Tours and Rainbow Reef Snorkeling. The island is a popular destination for scuba divers as well, with outfits like Sunn Odyssey Divers specializing in small-group dives of reefs and wrecks.
Freeport’s land-bound wildlife is no less impressive, with a large variety of feral (but often friendly) creatures like pigs, goats and horses frequenting the beaches and pine forests of the Grand Bahama Island. Garden of the Groves is a popular Freeport wildlife spot, where families flock for the beautiful tropical birds, iguanas and reptiles that call its paths home. A pot-bellied pig and pygmy goat petting zoo doesn’t hurt much either.
For those who prefer shopping over snorkeling, the international and traditional offerings at International Bazaar Freeport are not to be missed. Neither are the many bars and restaurants that the city offers.
