Halloween may have its origins in the Celtic festival Samhain, but today it’s celebrated by people across the globe--and IgoUgo travelers are no exception. They have the photos, stories, and journals of their scary (and interesting) trips to prove it.
Member Cindy Grant went to the source of Halloween tales and costumes when she spent time in Romania--Count Dracula’s home. Her journal Halloween in Transylvania outlines, in very helpful detail, where to stay and what to do, including a farewell dinner at Club Dracula, where the “decor was similar to a hunting lodge, and there were disembodied heads floating around and even some arms and legs scattered around on the walls.”
Dcorrri went to New Orleans for a week of good eats, and while those were certainly had, also got an “unexpected Halloween Parade on Bourbon Street that was quite interesting.”
C_Wheel describes the
French Quarter at Halloween as “a huge street party” and “one of the best places to be,” where “anyone in normal dress is definitely in the minority.”
Cindy Grant, our Transylvania pro, experienced London with Ghostour, “a week of haunted and creepy activities.” These included the Highgate Cemetary, the London Dungeon, and a ghost walk in Cambridge.
Hong Kong can be a good place to spend All Hallow’s Eve, and that’s what writeonthespot did with a couple of friends. The report on that experience: Hong Kong “is teeming with people dressed as witches and vampires,” but “they don't look scary.”
Scottish Halloween Traditions by Denise Scotland explains the Halloween tradition from ancient times to today. Check it out to learn more about turnip lanterns, trick-or-treating poems, and the history of Samhain.
Even theme parks like Disney World can be a place to channel the spirits of Halloween. Butterfly35 found the Magic Kingdom decorated with pumpkins, and Tori_rw got scared--but not too scared--at Universal Studio’s Halloween Horror Nights.
