Lots of media people here in New York have been in a tizzy about the Daily, an iPad-based newspaper. You’ll never need to buy a paper again! they say. Now, as far as travel goes, this makes us think of two things. One: do you buy the local paper when you’re visiting a new destination? I remember the days when getting a copy of the local rag was great fun and an essential activity, but now it’s possible to pre-qualify by visiting that newspaper’s website before a visit. (In case you wanted to learn more about Poughkeepsie, say.)
Second, does this make the iPad any more “essential” a gadget to bring along on a trip? I for one worry that it’s too conspicuous to haul out in a cafe or bar, especially if where I happen to be cooling my heels is rough around the edges. (That means you, strange part of Budapest I wandered into one fine evening.) However, I never take a flight without my noise-canceling headphones. What kind of gadgets do you like to bring along on your trips? Let us know in the comments.
